K-pop’s Month in Review: February 2018

SO WHAT HAPPENED IN K-POP IN FEBRUARY?

Solo Projects by Veterans: Several soloists and members of groups released solo tracks that hit the charts hard.

Henry of Super Junior M came back with the digital single “Monster.”

Hyolyn, former member of SISTAR, released single “To Do List.”

Yang Yoseop proved that he’s HIGHLIGHT’s main vocal for a reason with an exquisite album led by singles “Star” and “Where I Am Gone.”

Boa had a busy month with a Japanese comeback as well as a Korean comeback that featured singles “Nega Dola” and “One Shot, Two Shot.”

Sunggyu of INFINITE released his first album with the lovely title track “True Love.”

Rookies No Longer: Top groups who debuted in 2015 and 2016 proved that they’ve left behind their rookie stages for good.

gugudan made a glamorous concept switch with “The Boots.”

SEVENTEEN’s “Thanks” expressed gratefulness to fans.

NCT blew our minds when they teased their upcoming March comeback with NCT U tracks “Boss” and “Baby Don’t Stop.”

VROMANCE, brother group to MAMAMOO, released gorgeous single “Star.”

CLC returned to the popular concept of “Hobgoblin” with the fierce “Black Dress.”

SF9 put out their most exciting album yet, though its title track, “Mamma Mia,” wasn’t their best.

WJSN came back with the sweet “Dreams Come True.”

ANYTHING I SHOULD MAKE SURE I HAVEN’T MISSED?

Don’t miss hip hop duo Dynamic Duo’s digital single, the haunting “Bongjeseon” featuring Suran.

Take another look at “Gorgeous” by VAV, which I examined a bit when it dropped in January. The underrated boy group released a music video for the song this month, and it’s a good one.

If you weren’t a huge fan of Jeon Soyeon’s 2017 solo debut “Jelly” (I wasn’t either), then make sure to check out her brilliant first comeback with “Idle Song.”

Do check out vocal king Seo Eunkwang of BTOB’s collaboration with NC.A, “So Do You,” especially if you’re a fan of powerful ballads.

And whatever you do, don’t skip DAY6’s new Japanese single, “If,” which brings back the head-banging rhythm we heard from last year’s “I Wait.”

WHAT WERE THE BEST SINGLES OF THE MONTH?

Dynamic Duo, Bongjeseon (feat. Suran)

Yang Yoseop, Star

NCT U, Boss (KAYBOP FAVORITE)

VROMANCE, Star

NCT U, Baby Don’t Stop

Jeon Soyeon, Idle Song
