New girl group coming your way! “Honey Popcorn,” whose three members were previously Japanese actresses, have debuted with the lively “Bibidi Babidi Boo.” This isn’t just any cute debut, I’m pleased to say. All three songs on debut mini album “Bibidi Babidi Boo” check off bullet points from the get go: they’ve got the production, their composition is solid, they’re well-performed. The title track is a must-listen. It has so much texture, it’s a pleasure just to listen for each individual sound. While the zippy synths do occasionally come off a little harsh, it gives the song personality; it demands that you pay attention. Plus, the structure keeps you guessing with a quirky little prechorus that’s perhaps the best part of the song. Of course, the hook that follows is strong too, with a quick pace that contrasts with the vocal melody’s slow phrasing until the peppy “bibidi babidi boo” picks up the melody’s speed. It’s a stick-in-your-header, all right. While “Bibidi Babidi Boo” definitely beats out the rest of the album in regards to production and hooks, my personal favorite is “Pretty Lie,” because of the way its brightly fleshed out composition plays with moods and colors without ever falling into incoherence. That could be said for the whole album, though, which is part of what makes the debut this good. I’m looking forward to what these ladies have to offer with their first comeback.
